Life is a beach in San Diego with over 70 miles of dazzling beaches. The region’s near-perfect, year-round weather makes it a great place for hiking, boating, surfing, kayaking, golf, tennis and other outdoor activities. Often called the sports and fitness capital of the country, outdoor sports draw nearly as many visitors to the city as the local sightseeing attractions. With miles of shoreline and two protected bays, water sports are also popular in San Diego. The most popular waterways for sailing are Mission Bay and San Diego Bay. Windsurfing is popular on the bay and deep-sea fishing is excellent from La Jolla to Point Loma. Rowing, jet skiing, surf kayaking, scuba diving, and water skiing are all activities that can be pursued year round. Spectator sports are extremely popular in San Diego, the home to three major professional sporting teams; the Padres, the Chargers, and the Gulls (hockey). The MLB Padres and the NFL Chargers both play in Qualcomm Stadium, located in Mission Valley. Qualcomm also hosts the annual Holiday Bowl and is home to the San Diego State University Aztecs. The city has hosted several international and national sporting events that include SuperBowls and three America's Cup matches. Well-known for its awesome golf courses, the city of San Diego Parks & Recreation Department maintains two public golf courses, Torrey Pines and Balboa Park, both PGA tour stops. Balboa Park, located near downtown, features an 18-hole championship course with views of the bay and Coronado. Torrey Pines is world renowned for great greens and a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean. The readers of the San Diego Union-Tribune have consistently ranked this course the best place to golf. Tee-time is any time in San Diego with a total of 87 golf courses. |
